Festive clay shooting is a Christmas sporting tradition that has been part of the shooting world for a long time.
Competitive, challenging, but most of all fun , there's no better way to have a blast all in the name of Christmas.
Dome shaped artificial clay targets were first patented in America in 1880. They soon made their
way across the Atlantic and were first used in Britain in 1882. Over time developments in the
production of these clay targets made them less brittle , increasing the challenge of shattering
them mid air. In 1888, Cogswell & Harrison created targets made from lime and pitch and this
process is still used today. These clays are strong enough to remain intact when propelled by
electronic traps, but soft enough to break when hit by gun pellets.
By the 1900s Clay Shooting was a major sport in the UK and gatherings at Christmas became
popular, when landed gentry would compete with friends and family.
